Sloppy joes key west9/5/2023 ![]() ![]() References to sloppy joes as sandwiches begin by the 1940s. Ī 1940 advertisement illustrates another use for the term "Sloppy Joe " a women's cardigan sweater, described as "ever popular." Heinz in Pittsburgh, says their research at the Carnegie Library suggests that the sloppy joe's origins lie with the " loose meat sandwiches" sold in Sioux City, Iowa, in the 1930s and were the creation of a cook named Joe. Marilyn Brown, director of the consumer test kitchen at H.J. Circa 1937, Hemingway convinced Joe Russell, a bar owner in Key West, Florida, to rename his Silver Slipper bar Sloppy Joe's. ![]() ![]() His bar was reportedly frequented by Americans and Britons, including Errol Flynn, Ernest Hemingway, and Graham Greene. One theory of the sandwich's origin is that in 1917, Havana, Cuba, bar owner José "Sloppy Joe" Abeal y Otero created "a simple sandwich filled with ground beef stewed in tomatoes." This was possibly his interpretation of ropa vieja or picadillo. History Sloppy joe meat being prepared with Manwich sauceĮarly and mid-20th century American cookbooks offer plenty of sloppy joe-type recipes, though they go by different names: Toasted Deviled Hamburgers, Chopped Meat Sandwiches, Spanish Hamburgers, Hamburg a la Creole, Beef Mironton, and Minced Beef Spanish Style. There are several theories about the sandwich's origin. Open every day (unless a hurricane is coming), Sloppy Joe's Key West stays busy as all get-out, especially if a cruise ship or two (or three !) is in town. It's popular, especially with fans of the author. There's also the Toga Party, part of Fantasy Fest, our Mardi Gras held in late October (What's Fantasy Fest? Think a safer, cleaner version of New Orleans, and people now come from all over the WORLD to get their freak on (are you a little freaky-deaky? -)), and on New Year's Eve, they have the Dropping of the Conch Shell (as opposed to a ball, like in Times Square). Sloppy Joe's Key West is also known for three annual events: Around Hemingway's Birthday every year (July 21st), the bar holds the Hemingway Look-Alike Contest, which is part of the Hemingway Days Festival.
